New York Fashion Week
NYFW Blog – Hello Celebs
The number one dream I had as a youngster was to one day work at NYFW… Well that and be in the George Michael music video for Freedom. One was certainly slightly more doable ha. So, after about 10 years or hard work, manifesting and three fashion weeks down that month in Australia I received a phone call at Brisbane Fashion Week with the good news. I was going to NY!!! I screamed my head off and started to bawl my eyes out. I ran around the house I was staying at and was shaking with excitement. Then I HAD to call mum. I knew it was one of those moments that really makes your parents proud. Mum cried and was so happy.
I packed a massive suitcase of makeup and a tiny one with clothes and was on my way.
Sooo nervous, thinking I wasn’t cool enough but also having crazy thoughts like I was going definitely to meet Rihanna (spoiler alert …it never happened) ha.
I arrived at the apartment with a stoop and a broken toilet ..so New York and me and 5 other colleges knew we were in for a hell of a ride. We lived off pre-packaged sandwiches and burgers. ergghh
Let me tell you, NYFW is exactly what it looks like on Sex in The City. Crazy busy, massive celebs everywhere and the pressure is definitely on. The coolest cats in town and me and my 5 Aussie colleges in an environment where we so nervous and excited at the same time. We did a ton of shows with the coolest for me being Laquan Smith. He’s a huge designer for Rihanna, Beyoncé and a ton of hip hop and Rnb Artists. Right up my alley!
We arrived on the day, had a tiny room do to hair and makeup and we were all boiling hot, but who cares when you are at NYFW. Some really cool models walked in, some from America’s Next Top Model so I was so chuffed. The makeup look had a touch of Gold leaf on the lip and a really tricky wingy cut crease type of design in gold, glitter and turquoise. Quite challenging to do in a really short time but we nailed it. With about 15 mins to spare I heard an assistant say there was a room full of celebs and they needed artists. I literally threw my brush on the floor and ran after him ha. I just knew it was going to be amazeballs! We got the lift and entered the most crazy room of all. Inside was Editor in Chief of US Vogue Andre Leon Tally, Diane Von Furstenberg, Serena Williams, RnB Singers Cassie, and Deborah Cox. What a rush! We again as team smashed out all the looks, assisted each other every step of the way. I could feel sweat beads down my back but can totally fake that I am not phased by major star power. Ha. The show went on and the pics from the event were soo fierce. I remember walking out the door and spotting rapper Common too and that was the cherry on the icing!
We had such an amazing time in NY and I really loved it all. I wouldn’t call myself lucky as I have worked my butt off get the opp and I worked my butt off when I was there too. My lesson learnt was that don’t limit what you dream of even if they are on another continent and chances are slim because dreams can definitely come true.
